K-pop girl group with a unique virtual concept

K-pop sensations aespa burst onto the global music scene in 2020 with their heady concoction of infectious pop hooks and a ground-breaking virtual concept. The genre-blending quartet – made up of Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning – quickly became one of the industry's buzziest acts.

Formed by SM Entertainment – a leading force in K-pop – aespa made their highly anticipated debut in November 2020 with their chart-topping single, ‘Black Mamba’. The pulsating dance pop track introduced aespa as a force to be reckoned with in the competitive K-pop landscape.

But what truly set aespa apart from their K-pop peers is an innovative virtual world concept. Each member has an avatar or virtual counterpart (all sharing their real counterpart’s name but with ae- preceding it), further blurring the line between reality and fantasy. This concept has allowed the group to explore an expanding narrative across their releases, giving fans a multi-dimensional experience unlike any other.

In 2021, aespa returned with their highly anticipated follow-up single, ‘Next Level’. The track’s refined sound represented a step forward for the band both sonically and commercially, reaching No.2 on the K-pop charts. Aespa’s first mini-album Savage followed later that year and saw the group crack the Billboard Hot 200. That November, they became the first K-pop girl group to play the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The year 2022 marked several major milestones for aespa as they won Single Of The Year at the Korean Music Awards for ‘Next Level’ and Artist Of The Year at the Golden Disc Awards. The group announced their first ever world tour, including an appearance at Coachella. By May, they’d appeared on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and Time’s Next Generation Leaders lists and performed for a UN council on sustainable development.

Featuring the tracks 'Supernova' and 'Licorice', the group's debut full-length album Armageddon was released in May 2024, topping Bilboard's US World Albums chart and cementing their status as an international phenomenon.

Ever prolific, after successive extended plays and single albums, in March 2026 aespa announced that their second studio album, Lemonade, would be released in May, alongside UK and Europe dates as part of the LIVE TOUR – SYNK : COMPLæXITY.
