Bamboo Mat restaurant is opening a Canary Wharf flagship
Bamboo Mat, the Japanese-Peruvian restaurant in Stratford, will open an 82-cover second site at Canary Wharf's Wood Wharf this month, its owners said in July.
The new restaurant runs to 364 square metres across two floors, with a raw bar and cocktail bar at street level and a robata grill, sushi counter and hot kitchen above. The Stratford room's private dining room seats ten.
Bamboo Mat went from Leyton to Stratford to 364 square metres at Wood Wharf. The version that made its name was the small one.
Denis Gobjila and Victor Rosca opened the first Bamboo Mat in Leyton before moving to Stratford in 2022. Gobjila had worked at Chotto Matte and Rosca at Sushi Samba, Roka and Lucky Cat, the trade title Restaurant reported in July.
Those two CVs are the frame. Nikkei arrived in London as a big-room format — Chotto Matte, Sushi Samba — priced for expense accounts and built on volume.
Bamboo Mat made its name as the version of it a person could afford. Reviewing the Leyton restaurant, the critic Grace Dent called it a "smaller, cheaper and better Chotto Matte".
Wood Wharf is the point at which that description stops fitting. The design of the new site was overseen by Gynda Gourmet Hospitality Management and the build managed by Pic Construction Group, according to the announcement, with interiors in natural wood, cement and what the group described as muted materials.
"Bamboo Mat Canary Wharf has been a long time in the making and we're excited to unveil a completely unique design and larger site," Gobjila said in July.
The menu is expected to carry the dishes the Stratford room is known for, among them a ceviche deluxe of sea bass, prawn, scallop and cancha corn, and ox cheek with yuzu potato purée. No menu or prices have been published for Canary Wharf. A summer set menu at Stratford was listed at £55 a head including drinks on the group's own site in 2024.
Stratford remains open daily from noon until 10pm at 21-24 Victory Parade, East Village, E20 1FS, five minutes from Stratford International, and takes bookings through the group's site. The Canary Wharf site has no published address beyond Wood Wharf, and no booking link. We have not eaten at either restaurant.
The Stratford dining room was designed by the Peruvian interior designer Sebastian Salas. The Canary Wharf one was overseen by a hospitality management group and built by a construction contractor.
