Onitsuka Tiger sells the archive. Asics rents it out.
Asics releases its latest shoe with the Danish designer Cecilie Bahnsen on Saturday, a floral reworking of a running silhouette that Bahnsen's own shop has been selling since late August.
The GEL-KINETIC FR is priced at €200 on ceciliebahnsen.com, in two colourways the designer calls Silver and Black Coffee.
The shoe is built on an Asics chassis that splices the brand's GEL-Frantic and Kinetic platforms, giving it a stacked heel and a low forefoot. Onto that, Bahnsen has added floral straps across the midfoot, toggle closures, flower-shaped eyelets and her drawcord lacing.
What is interesting is the arrangement rather than the object. Asics is not lending its name to a designer here; it is supplying a technical platform for someone else's aesthetic and taking the margin.
A Copenhagen designer's floral runner and a 2003 Onitsuka Tiger revival, from the same company, four days apart.
Bahnsen's site lists three collaboration lines: The North Face, Alpha Industries and Asics. All three are performance or military brands, and none of them is a fashion house. The exchange runs one way, the designer gets construction she does not manufacture, the sportswear company gets a customer it does not otherwise reach.
Four days earlier, the same corporate parent went at the problem from the opposite end. Onitsuka Tiger, Asics' heritage label, released a shoe based on its TAI-CHI, a model from 2003, Fashionsnap reported on Thursday.
One arm rents the archive to an outside designer. The other sells the archive directly. Both are the same recognition, that a running-shoe company's most valuable inventory is the shapes it has already made.
The case against reading much into this is that everyone does it. Adidas has Simone Rocha, Nike has run designer programmes for two decades, and Asics itself has a long-standing line with Kiko Kostadinov. A designer collaboration is a category, not a strategy.

Bahnsen's three partners also complicate the picture. A designer with The North Face and Alpha Industries on the same shelf is not dependent on Asics, whatever the shoe count between them.
The collaboration is sold direct from Copenhagen with taxes and duties included and delivery outside the EU quoted at two to eight days. Asics has not yet published UK pricing for Saturday's wider release, and Dover Street Market Ginza is the only stockist named so far.
